Yellowstone Shooting: 3-Year Old Dies of Self-Inflicted Gunshot Wound

Tragic news this weekend out of Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming:

Officials are investigating the death of a three-year old from Idaho, whose mother says accidentally shot herself with a handgun while camping at the iconic tourist destination.

The identity of the toddler is unknown at this time, but Park Rangers responded Saturday morning to Grant Village Campground and sadly failed in their efforts to revive the victim, who became the first individual to die from a bullet in the park since 1978.

"We don't have all of the information, and we haven't drawn any conclusions," said Yellowstone spokesman Al Nash.

In February 2010, a federal law went into effect that permits visitors to possess firearms on camp grounds.

"Given the 3 million visitors we see here every year, there thankfully are very few fatalities reported in the park," Nash said, adding that heart attacks are the main cause of human deaths in the area.

It's unclear just how many family members were with the little girl on vacation; from where in Idaho she resided; or who was in possession of the weapon prior to it tragically falling into her young hands.
